Sister Matilda Klein, O.S.B., 1908-1987

Sister Matilda Klein, OSB, a resident of St. Mary’s Priory, Nauvoo, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 12, 1987) in the Burlington (Iowa) Medical Center where she had been a patient two weeks.

Sister Klein was born June 1, 1908, in Thayer, a daughter of Andrew and Mary Sepesy Klein.  She was the oldest of 10 children, four of whom are deceased.  Sister Klein attended schools in Thayer and Virden and graduated from Woods Business School in Washington, D.C.

Sister Klein worked in Chicago for several years before entering St. Mary’s Priory, Dec. 8, 1944.  She made her final profession of vows Dec. 28, 1949.  She served in Chicago, Peoria, Munster (Ind.) and in the business office at Alleman High School in Rock Island.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Klein of Ottawa; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lukach and Mrs. Clarence (Cecelia) Klachko, both of Streator, and Mrs. Carl (Ann) Muhlstadt of Kankakee.  She was preceded in death by five brothers.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Priory by the Rev. Thomas Brajkovich.  Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Nauvoo.  A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Priory.  Lamporte Funeral Home of Nauvoo is in charge of arrangements.
