Sr. Charlotte Sonneville, OSB, December 21, 1929 - August 22, 2022

Sister Charlotte (Angela) Sonneville, OSB, 92, of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island, IL, passed away Monday, August 22, 2022 at UnityPoint Health-Trinity, Rock Island. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022 in the Chapel of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island. The Mass will be live streamed through the Benedictine Sisters of St. Mary Monastery Facebook page. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 29, at the monastery, with a Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan, IL, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island. 

Charlotte Sonneville was born December 21, 1929, in Moline, IL, a daughter of Charles Louis and Marguerite (Cauwels) Sonneville. She entered the Benedictine Community on November 1, 1947. She made her profession as a Benedictine Sister on July 11, 1949. She celebrated her 70th Jubilee in 2019.

Sister Charlotte graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo, IL, received her BS in Music Education from the University of Illinois, did advanced studies in Guidance and Counseling at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and MA in Religious Education from Loyola University, Chicago.

Sister Charlotte’s ministry included: classroom and music teacher in Munster, Indiana, and in Illinois at grade and high schools in Peoria, Moline, Ladd, Peru, and St. Mary’s Academy, Nauvoo; Director of the Benedictine Religious Education Center in Peru, IL serving all local churches and also as Pastoral Associate for Adult Education and Liturgy Director at St. Patrick’s Parish, LaSalle. She founded the Illinois Valley Food Pantry in La Salle, and also began the Beginning Experience Program for the LaSalle/Peru area. She was the Pastoral Associate for Adult Education and Liturgy Director at St. Joseph’s Parish in Pekin, IL and at St. Ambrose Parish, Milan, IL. She served as Liturgy Director and as Director of Benet House Retreat Center at St. Mary Monastery. Sister’s past services included President of the Peoria Diocesan Sisters Conference, Vice President of Illinois Valley Clergy Conference, and member of Peoria Diocesan Liturgy Commission and Diocesan Board of Education.

She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sister Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Arthur, Joseph, and Charles Jr.

The Wake and Mass will be open to the public but seating will be limited. Those planning to attend services are respectfully requested to contact St. Mary Monastery at (309) 283-2102.
