Sr. Maureen Coughlin, OSB, 1917-2010
Sister Maureen (Mary Katherine) Coughlin O.S.B., 92, of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the monastery.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Mary Monastery Chapel, 2200 88th Ave. W., Rock Island. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at St. Mary Monastery, where a Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Monastery. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, is assisting with arrangements.
Sister Maureen was born April 24, 1917, in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Thomas J. Coughlin Sr. and Katherine O'Brien Coughlin. Sister Maureen attended St. Mark's School in Peoria. She graduated from the Academy of Our Lady, Peoria. Sister Maureen received a Bachelor of Science degree in English and liberal arts from Bradley University, Peoria, and did further study at Loretto Heights College, Denver, Colo., and St. Joseph's College in Hartford, Conn.
Sister Maureen served 41 years as an elementary teacher at Washington School, Peoria; Public School, Arlington; Sts. Peter & Paul, Nauvoo; St. Roch's, LaSalle; St. Anthony's, Atkinson; St. Mary's, Moline; St. Boniface, Peoria; St. John the Baptist, Clinton; Holy Family, Peoria. She also ministered in Catechetical work in Ladd; as tutor and librarian at St. Thomas More, Munster, Ind.; as librarian at Holy Family, Peoria; and as tape librarian at St. Mary's Academy and St. Mary Monastery.
She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Rev. Thomas J. Coughlin Jr.
