Oblate News: Lent 2023

Dear Oblates,

How many times during the past six weeks, have you said this:

“I wish the sun would shine.”

“It is certainly gloomy today.”

“How good it is to see the sunrise once again.”

“Did you notice the sun setting later this week?

Light is so important to us as human beings.  It is a gift that lifts us up, helps us see, warms us, and grows our food.  It is a gift we often take for granted.

Then we hear Jesus say: “You are the light of the world…Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”  Mt. 5:14,16)

What is this light that Jesus says we are?  It is the Light of Christ we received at Baptism symbolized by the candle we received.  We are to keep it burning brightly with the love, mercy, and compassion Jesus shares with us, and we generously share with others.

Instead of adding to our “to do list” this Lent, let us make a more concerted effort to grow in our understanding and practice of Benedictine hospitality during these 40 days of Lent.  Maybe it would help to light a candle during your prayer time each day as a reminder to keep the Light of Christ burning within you.  Or, you may find another ritual would be more helpful to you.

In this way, we can look forward to the joy of Easter with spiritual longing. (RB49:7)

May God bless your journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter with the special graces you need to be “a light for the world”.

Peace be with you and your families.
