Sister Eleanor Savage, O.S.B., 1911-2001

NAUVOO – A funeral Mass for Sister Eleanor Savage, OSB, a former elementary and high school teacher, was offered Monday, Nov. 12, at St. Mary Monastery here.

Msgr. Paul Showalter, pastor of St. Pius X Parish, Rock Island, was celebrant of the Mass.  Burial will take place this week at Calvary Cemetery in Rock Island, after the Sisters complete their move to their new monastery in Rock Island.

Sister Eleanor, 90, died Nov. 9, 2001, at Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Born Feb. 15, 1911, in Chicago, she attended St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo, entered the Nauvoo Benedictine community on July 26, 1929, and made her final profession of vows on July 16, 1934.  She held a bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa and also attended Western Illinois University in Macomb.

Sister Eleanor taught and served at St. Mary Monastery and Academy in Nauvoo; Alleman High School in Rock Island; St. Joseph’s School, Ivesdale; St. Anthony School, Atkinson; Sts. Peter and Paul School, Nauvoo; St. John’s School, Bradford; Immaculate Conception School, Monmouth and St. Boniface School, Peoria.  She also taught at schools in Chicago and in Munster, Ind.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.
