Sister Mary Joseph Sepesy, O.S.B., 1901-1988
Sister Mary Joseph (Susan) Sepesy, OSB, a resident of St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, died at 12:10 p.m., Wednesday, (May 11, 1988) in the Burlington (Iowa) Medical Center where she had been a patient one week.
Sister Mary Joseph was born on March 2, 1901 in Heenanville, Illinois, the 8th of 12 children born to Joseph and Anna (Demko) Sepesy, all of whom are deceased.
In August of 1920 she entered St. Mary Priory, pronouncing her final vows in August of 1926. She celebrated 60 years of religious commitment in August of 1982.
Sister Mary Joseph taught in St. Roch’s School, LaSalle; St. John’s, Clinton; St. Joseph’s, Ivesdale; St. Mary’s, Moline’ and St. Columba’s, Chicago. The majority of her teaching years, 27 were spent at Sts. Peter and Paul School and St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo, Illinois.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Sister Mary Joseph gave her body to science. A Memorial Mass was celebrated at St. Mary Priory on Saturday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Thomas Brajkovich was the principal celebrant with Rev. John Wissing and Rev. Paul Showalter as concelebrants.
