Sister Beatrice (Mary Grace) Flahaven O.S.B., 82, of St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at the monastery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the St. Mary Monastery Chapel, 2200 88th Ave. W., Rock Island. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at St. Mary Monastery, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Monastery. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, is assisting with arrangements.

Sister Beatrice was born on Jan. 30, 1928, in Wenona, Ill., a daughter of Willard C. and Clara Venetta Berry Flahaven. She attended Garfield Elementary and St. Mary School, both in Wenona. Sister Beatrice graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Nauvoo, Ill. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and organ from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, and a master's degree in music from the University of Illinois, Champaign. She also attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music, Chicago.

Sister Beatrice served 43 years as a classroom music teacher, private music teacher and parish organist. Her ministry included serving at St. Mary's, Moline; Immaculate Conception School, Monmouth; St. Anthony's, Atkinson; St. Thomas More, Munster, Ind.; and St. Mary's Academy, Nauvoo. She also served as organist at St. Mary Monastery.

She is survived by her Benedictine Sisters; her brother, Bernard; sister-in-law, Patricia; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and a sister.
