Sister Gregory Marquardt, O.S.B., 1903-1994
Sister Gregory Marquardt, 90, St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1994, at the Priory after failing health for the past several years.
Born Oct. 2, 1903, at Urbana, Ill., she was the daughter of John and Teresa Hogan Marquardt.
Sister Gregory Marquardt entered the religious community Sept. 8, 1925. She made her First Profession on June 28, 1927, and her Final Profession in 1930. She celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in August 1987.
A resident of St. Mary Priory the past 69 years, she received her degree in library science from the University of Illinois. She was a member of Beta Phi Mu Sorority, and taught at the following schools: St. Mary Academy, Nauvoo, from 1925 to 1928; St. Mary High School, Moline, Ill., from 1928 to 1944; and back to St. Mary Academy in Nauvoo from 1944 to 1975, when she then became the alumni director at St. Mary Academy until her retirement. She taught English, French, Spanish, Latin and biology throughout her career.
Survivors include her Benedictine sisters and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.
Her body had been donated to medical science for education and research. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Priory Chapel with Rev. Richard Slavish officiating.
