Sister Miriam Strater, OSB, 1908-2000
Sister Miriam Strater, 91, of St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo, died at 3:55 a.m. April 18, 2000, in the Fort Madison County Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.
Services were at 11:30 a.m. today in St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo. The Rev. Gregory Ketcham will officiate. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Nauvoo.
Sister Strater was born July 9, 1908, in Toledo, IL, to Merrill and Mae Orda (Davis) Strater.
She entered the Benedictine Community on Oct. 24, 1930, and made her final profession as a Benedictine Sister on July 22, 1935. She attended Sadorus High School, Sadorus, and St. Joseph High School, Ivesdale. Later, she attended St. John Nursing School, Springfield. She ministered at St. Mary’s in Moline; St. Bonifice and Holy Family in Peoria; St. Joseph’s in Ivesdale; St. Anthony’s in Atkinson; Immaculate Conception in Monmouth; St. Benedict’s in Ladd; and St. Roch’s in La Salle.
Survivors are two brothers, Harold Strater and Merrill Strater; four sisters, Mary Samuelson, Eva Bentley, Wanda Jenkins and Clara Horath.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
