Sister Philomena Sloan, OSB, 1914-1995

Sister Philomena Elizabeth Sloan, Order of Saint Benedict, 81, of St. Mary Monastery, Nauvoo, Ill., died at 7:54 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 1995, at the Monastery.

Born Jan. 19, 1914, at Ivesdale, Ill., she was the daughter of Felix and Mary Ann Sherlock Sloan.

Sr. Philomena was a teacher at St. Boniface in Peoria, Ill., St. Roch’s at LaSalle, Ill., St. John’s at Bradford, Ill., St. Mary’s at Moline, Ill., St. John’s at Clinton, Ill., and St. Mary’s Academy at Nauvoo.  She was missioned at St. Peter’s in Peoria, Ill.  She served on the staff at the Newman Center, University of Illinois and the Benedictine Religious Education Center at Peru, Ill., and as junior and novice mistress and subprioress at the monastery.  She entered religious life Sept. 24, 1933, made her first profession of vows on July 22, 1935, and her final profession of vows on July 25, 1938.

Survivors include one brother-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Monastery Chapel.

The memorial mass for Sr. Philomena will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Monastery Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Maloy officiating.

Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, is in charge of arrangements.
