Sister Florence Snider, O.S.B., 1897-1987
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday, May 23, at St. Mary’s Priory for Benedictine Sister Florence Snider, a teacher in the Peoria diocese for 52 years.
Sister Florence died at the Priory on Thursday, May 21.
Born in Piper City, Ill., on Aug. 20, 1897 to Dewitte and Mary Loretta Feeney Snider, she attended school in Urbana and Champaign before entering the Sisters of St. Benedict in Nauvoo. She made final profession in the order on July 11, 1922.
Sister Florence received a bachelor of science degree from DePaul University, Chicago, and a master of arts degree from the University of Illinois. During her teaching years she was a business instructor at the following high schools in the diocese; Spalding, Peoria; St. Joseph’s, Ivesdale; St. Mary’s, Nauvoo; and Alleman, Rock Island. She retired to the Priory in 1970.
Father Thomas Brajkovich was the principal celebrant of the funeral Mass, assisted by Father John Wissing and Father Paul Showalter.
